Chapter 9 of 13
Safety & Standards
Protecting kids, parents, and your business
Safety isn't optional. It's the foundation that everything else is built on. Get this wrong and nothing else matters.
Equipment Safety
Flooring - **Minimum:** 1-inch interlocking foam tiles over the entire kids zone - **Recommended:** 1.5-inch foam tiles with beveled edges - **Clean weekly** with non-toxic cleaner - **Replace** any cracked or compressed tiles immediately
Equipment Standards - All equipment should be age-appropriate (BabyGains products are designed for specific age ranges) - **No metal equipment** in the kids zone — wood and foam only - **No small parts** that could be choking hazards - **Weekly inspection:** Check for splinters, loose parts, wear - **Monthly deep clean:** All equipment sanitized
Space Design - **No sharp corners** on any furniture or fixtures - **Outlets covered** with safety plugs - **No cords** running through the space - **Clear sightlines** from main gym to kids zone - **Minimum 2 exits** from the kids zone area
Supervision Standards
Policy (Post Visibly) 1. Parents/guardians are responsible for their children at all times 2. Children must remain in the designated kids zone 3. Maximum capacity: [set based on your space size — typically 1 child per 15-20 sq ft] 4. Children under 3 must have a parent in the kids zone 5. Children 3-8 may use the kids zone while parent trains (with line of sight) 6. No food in the kids zone (water bottles okay) 7. Shoes optional in the kids zone (foam flooring is clean)
Staff Training All staff should know: - Location of first aid kit - Basic first aid procedures - Emergency contact protocol - How to handle common situations (crying child, minor injury, dispute) - When to contact parents (any injury, child asking for parent, unusual behavior)
Legal Protection
Waiver Updates Add to your membership agreement: - Acknowledgment of kids zone rules - Assumption of risk for children in the kids zone - Photo/video release for marketing (optional, but get it in writing) - Emergency contact information for each child
Insurance - **Contact your insurance provider** before opening the kids zone - Most commercial gym policies can add kids zone coverage for $50-150/month - Get it in writing that the kids zone is covered - Keep documentation of all safety inspections
Liability Reduction - **Document everything:** Safety inspections, incident reports, cleaning logs - **Post rules visibly** at the entrance to the kids zone - **Train staff** and document the training - **Maintain equipment** on a regular schedule with written logs
Incident Protocol
Minor (scrapes, bumps, crying): 1. Staff assesses situation 2. Parent notified immediately 3. First aid if needed 4. Incident logged in report book
Moderate (visible injury, persistent pain): 1. Parent called to kids zone immediately 2. First aid administered 3. Incident report filed 4. Manager notified
Serious (suspected fracture, head injury, allergic reaction): 1. Call 911 first 2. Parent notified immediately 3. Do not move the child unless necessary 4. Incident report filed 5. Insurance company notified within 24 hours
The Bottom Line
A well-maintained, properly supervised kids zone is no more risky than any other area of your gym. The key is documentation, consistency, and taking safety as seriously as you take programming.
